Show some love for unscented

Unscented

Lately I’ve been veering away from fragrance and leaning more toward unscented products. It may have something to do with a certain little bun in my oven (yes, it’s true!) making me more sensitive to scents these days.

The truth is, with the exception of some naturally derived scents (such as from essential oils), a lot of scents in common household products can be harmful. Here’s a great article all about it written by a former coworker of mine: Sensitive to Scents. The problem is that manufacturers aren’t required to disclose the ingredients in “fragrance” or “parfum” because they’re considered trade secrets. This means that they can include anything from common allergens and irritants, to carcinogens and hormone disruptors. Lovely, right?

The other thing to be wary of is that some products labelled “unscented” or “fragrance free” are allowed to contain–you guessed it–fragrance, as “masking agents.” Ick!

Unscented products aren’t just for us preggers folk out there. Many people (my mother included) are highly sensitive to fragrance, whereas others just prefer to go scent-free once in a while. For those who love scented products, there are certainly healthy options out there. However, I find that a lot of unscented products are refreshingly clean, simple, and subtle.

Here are some of my current favourites:

Curelle Unscented Lotion: I’m on my third bottle of this stuff–it’s fantastic. For my fellow bloodhounds out there (who swear that every unscented product actually has a scent) I personally think that the–very subtle–scent in this lotion is downright dreamy. My husband will catch me sniffing my unscented lotion and wonder what’s wrong with me. They market it as a hand and body lotion, but I find that it’s not heavy enough for a hand cream. What it’s perfect for is locking in moisture after a shower–especially for just-shaved legs. And look at that clean ingredient list: heaven!

Ingredients: Distilled water, cetearyl glucoside, organic Persea gratissima (Avocado) oil, sucrose cocoate, vegetable glycerin, D-alpha tocopherol (natural Vitamin E), panthenol (provitamin B5), Lonicera japonica

Consonant Dealkalizing Deodorant: I reviewed this beauty in my discussion of natural deodorants, where it earned top marks for effectiveness. It’s also Canadian, non-toxic, and yes, unscented. If anyone out there is nervous to try natural deodorants, this is a great one to try.

Ingredients: Cocos Nucifera Oil (Coconut Oil), Maranta Arudinacea Root Powder (Arrow Root Powder), Bentonite Clay, Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Gel, Silk Amino Acids, Beeswax, Emulsifying Wax NF, Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter (Cacao Seed Butter), Zinc Oxide

Consonant Natural Lip Conditioner: Another Consonant product! If a lip balm exists with cleaner ingredients, I have yet to find it. This little gem has three simple ingredients: almond oil, beeswax (sorry, vegans!), and jojoba oil. I adore it. Better yet, Consonant is now available at Sephora online.

Ingredients: Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil (Sweet Almond Oil), Beeswax, Simmondsia Chinensis Oil (Jojoba Oil)

Acure Sensitive Facial Cream: I know the ingredient looks monstrous at first glance, but if you take it ingredient by ingredient, you’ll see that it’s actually a very clean product. I also find that it’s very hydrating on my sad, dry, winter skin. For those with extremely sensitive noses, know that this product does have more of a natural scent to it compared to the other fragrance-free products in this post. It also has shea butter in it, which can sometimes break me out, but so far so good with this little powerhouse!

Ingredients: purified water/aqua/eau, aqueous extracts/extraits aqueux: aloe barbadensis leaf juice, organic euterpe oleracea (acai) fruit extract, organic rubus fruticosus (blackberry) fruit extract, organic rosa canina (rosehips) fruit extract, organic punica granatum (pomegranate) fruit extract, organic calendula officinalis (calendula) flower extract, organic matricaria recutita (chamomile) flower extract, organic aspalathus linearis (rooibos) leaf extract, orbignya oleifera seed oil, vegetable glycerin, butyrospermum parkii, cocoglycerides, sesamum indicum (sesame) seed extract isoamyl laurate, cetearyl alcohol, avena sativa kernel oil, ethylhexyl olivate, sodium levulinate, sodium anisate, sodium behenoyl lactylate, olea europaea (olive) oil unsaponifiables, cetyl alcohol, citric acid, panthenol, argania spinosa (argan) kernel oil, citrus aurantium dulcis, phenethyl alcohol, alpha bisabolol, glycerophosphoinositol choline, d- alpha tocopherol acetate, potassium sorbate, glyceryl caprylate, allantoin, sodium phytate, anthemis nobilis flower oil, marrubium vulgare stem cells
