A solid foundation

allfoundations

Happy New Year! Okay, it’s been 2017 for almost a month, and I haven’t posted in a long time. But it’s time to change that.

To kick 2017 off, I thought it would be fun to talk about the makeup that matters most: foundation (or foundation alternatives). After all, it’s what makes everything else work…or not.

I wear quite a few different versions of foundation (as you can tell from the photo), but what they have in common is that they’re all natural and non-toxic. Yay! Without further ado, here are some of my favourite products from each category.

concealer

Concealer

I wish I could be content with applying just little concealer, mascara, and lip balm before heading out the door, but I typically go for an all-over base, and use concealer for occasional blemishes.

Favourite: RMS “un” cover-up
Once I got over the weirdness of using my finger to apply this concealer from its little jar (just me?) I fell in love with it. The ingredient list is really clean, and coverage is fantastic. Just make sure to blend well!

Ingredients: *Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, *Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, *Cera Alba (Beeswax),  *Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, *Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Tocopherol(non-GMO), *Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, and may contain: [+/- Titanium Dioxide CI 77891, Iron Oxides CI 77492, CI 77491, CI 77499] * CERTIFIED ORGANIC

Runner up: Hynt Duet Perfecting Concealer
A great option as well, Hynt’s concealer can actually be added to some facial oil for a makeshift foundation.

Ingredients: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Tri-Isostearlyl Citrate, Acacia Decurrens/Jojoba/Sunflower seed wax, Hydrogenated Jojoba Oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) seed oil, , Stearalkonium Hectorite, Propylene Carbonate, Tocopherol, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E-natural preservative), Oleic Acid, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf extract, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) oil, Boron Nitride, Theobroma Grandiflorum (Cupuacu) Seed butter.

Apply with: small precision brushes, and a blending brush
I’ve found that the key to applying concealer is to blend well–otherwise it can look cakey, or too perfect compared to the area around it.

tintedmoisturizer

Tinted Moisturizer

Tinted moisturizer, followed by some sheer powder, is my daily go-to.

Favourite: Juice Beauty SPF 30 Tinted Mineral Moisturizer
This is a new one for me–I picked it up recently from Whole Foods. It’s nice and sheer, with just enough coverage, and pretty darn good ingredients (zinc oxide sunscreen FTW!).

Ingredients: Active Ingredient: Zinc Oxide 20%; Inactive Ingredients: Organic juices of pyrus malus (organic apple juice)*, vitis vinifera (organic white grape juice)*, aloe barbadensis (organic aloe leaf juice)*, cocos nucifera (organic coconut oil)*, caprylic/capric triglyceride, sorbitan stearate, ricinus communis (castor seed oil), polyglyceryl-10 laurate, magnesium sulfate, helianthus annuus (organic sunflower seed oil)*, simmondsia chinensis (organic jojoba seed oil)*, tocopherol (Vitamin E), sodium hyaluronate (vegetable hyaluronic acid), phenethyl alcohol, ethylhexylglycerin, iron oxides, citrus reticulata (mandarin) & citrus aurantium (petitgrain) pure essential oils.

Runner up: Andalou Color + Correct
I prefer the ingredients in the Juice Beauty product by a little bit (no silicones, for example) but this one is a great option as well. It applies really nicely, and has great light coverage.

Ingredients: ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: Zinc Oxide 20.0% INGREDIENTS: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice*, Purified Water (Aqua), Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides, Vegetable Glycerin, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Polyglyceryl-2 Oleate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Polyglyceryl-2 Stearate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Dimethicone, Magnesium Sulfate, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Plant Stem Cells (Alpine Rose, Malus Domestica, Solar Vitis) and BioActive 8 Berry Complex*, Soothing Complex: [Sodium Hyaluronate, Magnolia Officinalis Bark Extract, Boswellia Serrata (Boswellin) Extract], Rosa Damascena (Rose) Flower Distillate*, Rosa Canina (Rosehip) Fruit Oil*, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Seed Oil*, Borago Officinalis (Borage) Seed Oil*, Iron Oxides, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch*, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Leaf Extract*†, Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract*†, Tocopherol, Phenethyl Alcohol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Rose Isolates, Vanilla Isolates, Pelargonium Graveolens (Rose Geranium) Flower Oil*, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil*

Apply with: your hands!
Tinted moisturizers are made to be applied with fingertips. As long as you blend well, it’s really all you need.

liquidfoundation

Liquid Foundation

Favourite: Zuii Certified Organic Flora Liquid Foundation
As you can see from this nearly empty bottle, I love this foundation! This Australian company is a rare gem–I haven’t been able to find a full coverage foundation that has better ingredients.

Ingredients: PRUNUS AMYGDALUS DULCIS (SWEET ALMOND) OIL*, AQUA, CALENDULA OFFICINALIS (CALENDULA) OIL*, GLYCERINE*, ALOE BARBADENSIS (ALOE VERA) LEAF JUICE*, MICA, LONICERA CAPRIFOLIUM (HONEYSUCKLE) FLOWER EXTRACT, CITRUS AURANTIUM DULCIS (ORANGE) PEEL OIL*, ROSA DAMASCENA (ROSE) FLOWER OIL*, CYMBOPOGON MARTINI (PALMAROSA) OIL*, PELARGONIUM GRAVEOLENS (GERANIUM) FLOWER OIL, DAUCUS CAROTA (CARROT) SATIVA SEED OIL*, CHAMOMILLA RECUTITA (CHAMOMILE) FLOWER EXTRACT, EQUISETUM ARVENSE (HORSETAIL) EXTRACT*, URTICA DIOICA (NETTLE) LEAF EXTRACT*, GLYCERYL STEARATE, CETEARYL ALCOHOL, TOCOPHEROL, ASCORBYL PALMITATE MAY CONTAIN (+/-) CI 77007 CI 77491 CI 77492 CI 77499 CI 77891 CI 77947 CI 75470 * Certified Organic ingredients

Apply with: Liquid foundation brush
The trick here is proper application. Applying with the fingertips can come off as streaky, so a proper foundation brush is the way to go. I use this one from CoverFX.

powder

Powder

Favourite: bareMinerals Original Mineral Veil
bareMinerals makes a few different options of this bestselling product (illuminating, hydrating, and tinted) but I’m a sucker for the original. It sets the tinted moisturizer or foundation into place.

Ingredients: Zea Mays (Corn Starch), Corn Starch Modified, Zinc Stearate, Magnesium Stearate. May Contain: Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499)

Apply with: powder brush
As far as I can tell, any fluffy powder brush will do nicely.

powderfoundation

Powder Foundation

I still prefer a liquid foundation, but I have some friends who swear by powder foundation. It’s best for a matte finish, or for those who have oily skin. But be warned–any dry, flaky patches will be exacerbated by a powder foundation.

Favourite: Zuii Certified Organic Flora Foundation
Again, Zuii wins! They have lots of colour options, which is great to see (pictured here is “Macadamia”). You don’t need a ton of product to get full coverage, either.

Ingredients: ROSA DAMASCENA FLOWER*, JASMINUM OFFICINALE (JASMINE) FLOWER*, CHAMOMILLA RECUTITA (MATRICARIA) FLOWER*, SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS (JOJOBA) SEED OIL*, ALOE BARBADENSIS LEAF JUICE*, MICA, CAPRYLIC CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, CHAMOMILLA RECUTITA FLOWER EXTRACT*, EQUISETUM ARVENSE EXTRACT*, URTICA DIOICA (NETTLE) LEAF EXTRACT*, MAGNESIUM STEARATE, TOCOPHEROL, ASCORBYL PALMITATE. MAY CONTAIN (+/-) CI 77491 CI 77492 CI 77947  CI 77891 CI 77499 CI 77007 CI 77510 *Certified Organic ingredients

Runner up: CoverFX Pressed Mineral Foundation
I found this one a wee bit drying, but it’s a great natural option for those with oily skin. I probably would have loved it as a teenager!

Ingredients: Mica, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Silica, Kaolin, Lauroyl Lysine, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Powder, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Dehydroacetic Acid, Tocopherol, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Phytosphingosine, Ethyl Linoleate, Ethyl Linolenate, Ethyl Oleate. May Contain: Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Chromium Oxide Greens (CI 77288).

Apply with: Buffing face brush (or kabuki brush)
A flat-topped brush is ideal for buffing powder foundation into the skin. Make sure to blend well!
